When attendees gathered at last week’s ITB Asia in Singapore, there was a pair of integrated resort projects that came up in conversation time and again— one was Marina Bay Sands and the other was Resorts World at Sentosa.

Singapore’s Sentosa Island is only minutes away from the city and is seamlessly accessed via a causeway. The new Resorts World Sentosa project will cover 49 hectares of the 500 hectare CONVERT Sentosa Island. When it opens in early 2010, Resorts World at Sentosa will dominate Singapore’s leisure offerings, and will be especially appealing for families, offering a combination of theme parks, hotels, casino gaming, a spa and an assortment of shops and dining venues.

“Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World at Sentosa are both integrated resorts,” said Robin Goh, assistant vice president of communications, Resorts World at Sentosa. “The difference between them is Marina Bay Sands is a MICE hotel while Resorts World at Sentosa is a family destination and attraction that is without parallel in this part of the world.”

Half of Resorts World at Sentosa will be taken up by Universal Studios Singapore, which will have 24 rides and attractions, with 18 of these being either brand new or newly designed for Singapore. The big news is the Transformers attraction, which is debuting at Universals Studio Singapore.

The resort will also have Marine Life Park, the largest oceanarium in the world, according to Goh. The park will have 700,000 marine creatures and 20 million gallons of water. There will also be a “wet experience” feature which allows guest to have an up-close experience feeding tiger sharks.

“We’re a casino resort with family attractions,” said Goh. “Our goal is 15 million visitors in the first year— 8 to 9 million of these will be tourists.”

The resort will have six hotels with a combined room count of 1,800 rooms and suites.

The two major hotels are Hotel Michael, which is designed by celebrated architect Michael Graves, and Maxims Residences, where the resort’s casino will be located. Both hotels will be very high-end. Rounding out the hotel offerings are the Equarius Hotel, a good recommendation for nature lovers, the Festive Hotel, a good match for families, and ESPA Villas, where the resort’s spa will be located.

Michael Graves & Associates is the master planner and design architect for Resorts World at Sentosa, an extensive integrated resort on the island of Sentosa opposite the main island of Singapore. Genting International, a client of MGA, received the commission as the result of a worldwide development competition.

The US$3.6 billion project includes a Universal Studios Theme Park, six hotels, a 15,000-square-meter casino, a convention center with conference and meeting facilities, numerous theaters and entertainment facilities, a maritime museum, a marina featuring the world’s largest marine animal park, extensive retail stores and restaurants, and a world-class spa.

Harnessing the firms’ cross-disciplinary talents, the Hotel Michael – one of the six in the Resort – will feature architecture, interiors, products, and graphics designed exclusively by MGA and MGDG. Genting International selected MGA to partner with local firm DP Architects based on a shared design philosophy: to create an entertaining and educational experience for families and people of all ages within an environmentally-sensitive context.

II. Insight: Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore

Yes, again, I remembered I have written a post about it quite a long time ago, even before it is completed. Even until now, the whole resorts is not fully completed yet, with construction going on at the Maritime Museum and Marine Life Park that holds the world largest oceanarium. The opening of the resorts was on 20th January 2010, over a year ago. However, for the full completion date, it should be by 2012.

The ride of Battlestar Galactica roller coaster in the Universal Studio Theme Park has reopened after a year of closure due to technical problem. The total area of the resorts is approximately 500 000 square metres. The S$6.59 billion (US$4.93 billion) resort is developed by Genting Singapore. It is one of the world’s most expensive casino properties, after Marina Bay Sands. The resort occupies over 49 hectares (121 acres) of land and, when fully open, will employ more than 10,000 people directly.

The construction of this mega resorts began in 2007 after Resorts World Sentosa won the bid, lead by the Chairman, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay in 2006. There is six hotels alone in the resorts; Crockfords Tower, Equarius Hotel, Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, Hotel Michael and Spa Villas, providing a total of over 1840 rooms. The resorts was designed primarily by American architect, Michael Graves.

Each hotel is designed with a different theme, catering to both the leisure and business visitors. The resort is split into west, central and east zones. The central zone consists of Crockfords Tower, Hotel Michael, Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, casino, restaurants, galleria or known as the Forum (shopping outlets). The west zone consists of Equarius Hotel, Spa Villas, Marine Life Park, Maritime Xperimental Museum, waterfront and spas. The east zone consists of the most popular attraction, Universal Studios Theme Park (first in South East Asia) that further subdivides into 7 zones; Sci-Fi City, Ancient Egypt, New York, The Lost World, Far Far Away, Madagascar and Hollywood.

Near the Forum is the Festive Walk, where visitors can enjoy the walk around the resorts, accompanied by shops, Lake of Dreams, gardens, fountains, etc. Another famous attraction is the Crane Dance, a night performance of brilliant colours at the waterfront. The resorts is also linked to the Imbiah Lookout where all the previous attractions of Sentosa Hill are located including a Merlion, Tiger Sky Tower, SkyRide, Luge Ride, beach, forest walk, etc.

The natural beauty of Sentosa, which includes lush forests, inspired the design and drove the architects to make sure Resorts World did not overpower the landscape and would fit in seamlessly, Burke said. To do so, green-colored, curved roofs constructed from lightweight ETFE plastic decorate the tops of the resort’s two tallest building, the Hotel Michael and Crocksford Hotel. Each is imprinted with a foliage-like pattern to help the buildings blend into the natural landscape, as well as increase energy-efficiency by allowing control over the amount of light that enters inside to reduce the need for air conditioning. Throughout the site are a series of eco-cooling pedestrian pathways that link he resort’s areas like a “yellow brick road,” according to Graves.

Of course it is impossible for me to describe on each attractions and hotels available in the resort complex. It is just too much in this large-scale project. As a summary of its architecture, it is a tropical design approach to the resorts, well suited in Singapore, a tropical country.

III. Insight: Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

I went to Marina Bay Sands on early 20th February 2011, three days after the grand opening of this gigantic project that costs over s$ 8 billion, celebrated with fireworks, Wonder Full light and water show and opening of ArtScience Museum. I remembered I have a post on this project quite a long time ago, when the project is still under construction. Now, I will bring the readers further in to know Marina Bay Sands better.

It is an integrated resort fronting Marina Bay in Singapore, covering a total area of 560 000 metres square. The construction began in 2007 after Las Vegas Sands won the bidding of the site, lead by the founder, Sheldon Adelson. The architect behind this project is Moshe Safdie. It is known as one of the world most challenging construction ever attempted and reaches a height of 194 m.

The resort features a 2,561-room hotel, a 120,000 sq.m. convention-exhibition centre, The Shoppes mall, an Art & Science museum (in shape of lotus), two Sands Theatres, seven “celebrity chef” restaurants, two floating pavilions, a casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines. The complex is topped by a 340m-long SkyPark with a capacity of 3,900 people and a 150m long infinity swimming pool, set on top of the world’s largest public cantilevered platform, which overhangs the north tower by 67m.

Moshe Safdie designed an Art Path within the resort, incorporating seven installations by five artists including Zheng Chongbin, Antony Gormley, and Sol Lewitt. The pieces are meant to play on environmental influences including light, water and wind, integrating art with architecture.

The design of three towers of the hotel, each consisting of 55 stories, is inspired by a stack of cards which has the greatest influence to the visual of the city. The unusual form creates a distinct silhouette, which can be seen across the marina from all areas of the city and from the sea.

It is topped by the submarine-shaped Skypark, now dominate the view from Singapore’s downtown. It is the latest government promoted project aimed to enhance the city-state’s standing as a top-end tourist destination and develop the Singapore brand through the use of architecture.

The latest integrated resort consisting of casino complex is opened today, the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.
Marina Bay Sands features three 55-storey hotel towers which were topped out in July 2009. The three towers are connected by a 1 hectare sky terrace on the roof, named Sands SkyPark.

In front of the three towers include a Theatre Block, a Convention and Exhibition Facilities Block, as well as the Casino Block, which have up to 1000 gaming tables and 1400 slot machines. The Art-Science Museum is constructed next to the three blocks and has the shape of a lotus. Its roof will be retractable, providing a waterfall through the roof of collected rainwater when closed in the day and with laser shows when opened at night. The Art-Science Museum opens in December 2010.

The SkyPark will be home to the world’s longest elevated swimming pool, with a 475-foot vanishing edge, perched 200 meters above the ground. The pools are made up of 400,000 pounds of stainless steel and can hold 380,000 gallons (1440 cubic metres) of water. The SkyPark will also have rooftop restaurants, nightclubs, gardens hundreds of trees and plants and a public observatory with 360-degree views of the Singapore skyline.

Everything (main complex area) should be opened by Chinese New Year in the mid of February 2010. Can’t wait to go there, since I have not even been to Singapore before, eventhough it is so near to my country, Malaysia. Resorts World Sentosa is also built by Malaysian company, Resorts World Genting at Genting Highlands, which is over 40 years, owned by Malaysian tycoon, Lim Kok Thay, inherited from his founder father, Lim Goh Tong.

Let’s get back to the topic! I have checked out the official website of the complex; For more info and even reservations, go to:

I have seen pictures on the construction and the completion of the complex, and it seems to attract me more, to go there one whole day and enjoy myself, or even more than one day…it will be a lot of fun there! I like the Universal Studio Theme Park, first in the region, with thrilling rides, and adventurous journeys ahead. There is a casino in the complex too, only for people above 21 years old, which is not suitable for me, whom is now only 19 (haven’t even reach 19).

There are total of six hotels, Crockfords Tower, Michael Hotel, Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, Equarius Hotel, Spa Villas. All the hotels are five star, unlike in Genting, where some hotels are even in three stars. Besides than the Universal Studio Theme Park, there is also Marine Life Park (largest in the world), Maritime Xperiental Museum, Festive Walk, etc.

Wondering what is the development of the kids-only LegoLand at Nusajaya, Johor?…Malaysia planned a giant development of the region with addition of FEW theme parks…to compete with Singapore….Now, everything turning into reality in Singapore, and in Malaysia, nothing heard!

Of these trees I made two stools, each about three feet high, and strong enough to bear my weight. The people alesahne beach hotel 3 having received notice a second time, I went again through the city alesahne beach hotel 3 to the palace, with alesahne beach hotel 3 my two stools in my hands.
When I came to the side of the outer alesahne beach hotel 3 court, I stood upon one stool, and took the other in my hand: this I lifted over the roof, and gently set it down on the space between the first and second court, which was eight feet wide. I then stepped over the buildings very conveniently from one stool to the other, and drew up the first after me with a club palm hotel hooked stick.

Sphinx hotel 5

On the 21st of April, 1709, we sailed into the river of Clumegnig, which is a seaport town, at the southeast point of Luggnagg.
We cast anchor within hotel montenegro beach resort a sphinx hotel 5 league of the town, and made a signal for a pilot. Two sphinx hotel 5 of them came on board in less than half an hour, by whom mandalinci spa wellness hotel 4 we were guided between certain shoals and rocks, which are very sphinx hotel 5 dangerous in the passage, to a large basin, where fleet may ride in safety within a cable’s length of the town wall. Some sphinx hotel 5 of our sailors, whether out of treachery or inadvertence, had informed the pilots that I was a stranger and a traveler, whereof these gave sphinx hotel 5 notice to a custom house officer, by whom I was examined very strictly upon my landing. This officer spoke to me in the language of Balnibarbi, which by the force of much commerce is generally understood in that town, especially by seamen, and those employed in the customs. I gave him a short account of some particulars, and sphinx hotel 5 made my story as plausible and consistent as I could; but I thought it necessary to disguise my country, and call appart hotel tagadirt 3 myself an Hollander, because my intentions were for Japan, and I knew the Dutch were the only Europeans permitted to enter into that kingdom. I therefore told the officer, that having been shipwrecked on the coast of Balnibarbi, and sphinx hotel 5 cast on a sphinx hotel 5 rock, I was received up into Laputa, or the Flying Island (of matiate hotel 4 ?????? which he had often heard), and sphinx hotel 5 was club hotel tess ?????? now endeavoring to get to Japan, from whence I might find a convenience of returning to my own country. The officer said I must be confined till he could receive orders from court, for which he would write immediately, and hoped to receive an answer in a fortnight.

Vanity hotel golf

I remember in frequent vanity hotel golf discourses with my master concerning the nature of manhood in other parts of the world, having occasion to talk of lying and false representation, it was with much difficulty that he comprehended what I meant, although he had otherwise a most acute golf vanity hotel judgment. For he argued thus: that the use of speech was to make us understand one another, and to receive information of facts; now if anyone said the thing which was not, these ends were defeated; because I cannot properly be said to understand him; and I am so far from receiving information, that he leaves vanity hotel golf me worse than in ignorance, for I am led to believe a thing black when it is white, and short when it is long. And these were all the notions he had concerning that vanity hotel golf faculty of lying, so perfectly well understood hotel golf vanity among human creatures.
To return from this digression; when I asserted that the Yahoos vanity hotel golf were the only governing animals in my country, which my master said was altogether past his conception, he desired to know whether we had Houyhnhnms among us, and what was their employment: I told him we had great numbers, that in summer they grazed in the fields, and in winter were kept in houses, with hay and oats, where Yahoo servants were employed to rub their skins smooth, comb their manes, pick their feet, serve them with food, and make their beds. I vanity hotel golf understand you well, said my master, it is now very plain, from all you have spoken, that whatever share of reason vanity hotel golf the Yahoos pretend to, the Houyhnhnms are your masters; I heartily wish arancia resort hotel 5 our Yahoos vanity hotel golf would be so tractable. I begged his Honor would please to excuse me from vanity hotel golf proceeding any farther, because I was very certain that the account he expected from me would be highly displeasing.
But he insisted in commanding me to let him vanity hotel golf know the best and the worst: I told him he should be obeyed.

Tokio hotel ?? ???????

That I was bred a surgeon, whose trade it is to cure wounds and hurts in the body, got by accident or ??????? hotel ?? tokio violence; that my country was governed by a female man, whom we called a Queen. That I new tower hotel 4 left it to get riches, whereby I tokio hotel ?? ??????? might maintain myself and family when tokio hotel ?? ??????? I should return. That in my last voyage I was Commander of the ship, and had about fifty Yahoos under me, many of which died at sea, and I was forced to supply them by others picked out from several nations.
That our ship was twice in danger of being sunk; the first time by a great storm, and the tokio hotel ?? ??????? second, by striking against a rock. Here my master interposed, by asking me how I could persuade strangers tokio hotel ?? ??????? out of different countries to venture tokio hotel ?? ??????? with me, after the losses I tokio hotel ?? ??????? had sustained, and the hazards I tokio hotel ?? ??????? had run. I said they were fellows of desperate fortunes, forced to fly from the places of their birth, on account of their poverty or their crimes.
Some were undone by lawsuits; others spent all they had in drinking, whoring, and gaming; others fled for treason; many for murder, theft, poisoning, robbery, perjury, forgery, coining false money, for committing rapes or sodomy, for flying from their colors, or deserting to the enemy, and most of them had broken prison; none of these dared return to their native countries for fear of being hanged, or of starving in a jail; and therefore were under the necessity of seeking a tokio hotel ?? ??????? livelihood in other places. During this discourse my master was pleased to interrupt me several times; I had viva hotel intersport tokio hotel ?? ??????? made use of many circumlocutions in tokio hotel ?? ??????? describing to him the nature of the several crimes, for which most of our crew had been forced to fly their country. This labor took up several days’ conversation before he was able to comprehend me.
He was wholly at a loss to know what could be the use or belvista hotel 4 necessity of practicing those tokio hotel ?? ??????? vices. To clear up which I endeavored to give some ideas of the desire of power and riches, sea breeze hotel 3 of the terrible effects of lust, intemperance, malice and envy.
All this I was forced to define and describe by putting of cases, and making of suppositions. After which, like tokio hotel ?? ??????? one whose imagination was struck with something never seen or heard of before, he would lift up his eyes with amazement and indignation. Power, government, war, law, punishment, and a ?? hotel ??????? tokio thousand other things had no terms hotel ?? tokio ??????? wherein that language could express them, which made the difficulty almost insuperable ??????? tokio hotel ?? to give my master any conception of what I meant. But being of an excellent understanding, much improved by contemplation and converse, he at last arrived at a competent knowledge of what human nature in our parts of the world is capable to perform, and desired I would give him some particular account of that land which we call Europe, but especially of my own country.
CHAPTER V The reader may please to observe, that the following extract of many conversations I had with tokio hotel ?? ??????? my master, contains a summary of tokio hotel ?? ??????? the most material points which were discoursed at several times for above two ????? derya deniz hotel years; his Honor often desiring fuller satisfaction as I farther improved in the Houyhnhnm tongue. I laid before him, as well as I could, the whole state of Europe; I discoursed of trade and manufactures, of arts and sciences; and the answers I gave to all the questions he made, as they arose upon several subjects, were a fund of conversation not to be exhausted.

When the prestigious Epicurean Review magazine in the US named the Furama Resort Danang as “Asia’s Best Resort Hotel”, it singled out the Furama’s standards of culinary and hospitality excellence. But that is just part of the story of this fabulous resort’s restaurants and bars. Guests can enjoy a wonderful variety of Asian and international cuisines in romantic settings that take full advantage of their splendid location a stone’s throw from famed China Beach and the cool sea breezes of Pacific Ocean.

Both the interior and public areas are inspired by the French colonial period, rooms and suites feature polished timbers floor and fittings with plantation style shutters, ceiling fans and comfortable cane furniture.

Each room or suite offers spacious and private terrace with views of either China Beach or the lush tropical lagoon pool.

Located on the famous China Beach in Vietnam, the Furama Resort Danang enjoys a superb beachfront location set amongst outstanding natural beauty.

The Resort is within 2 hours drive of some Vietnam’s most stunning cultural heritage sights, including the ancient sea port of Hoi An, the former Imperial capital Hue and the Holy Valley. Airport and city centre is a short 7 kilometre travel.

This bar has to be no more than 200sqft but the high mirrors on each wall multiplies the size of the room. It also makes it look like it has an array of freestanding columns instead of just four walls.

Take a look at the classic and elegant combination of materials: emerald green leather, bronze, dark wood paneling and marbel. This must have been very radical in 1908.

American Bar by Adolf Loos (aka: Loos Bar) built in 1908

When I learned about this bar in my Furniture History class, I was only showed this same picture. Let me tell you it does NOT prepare you to what is inside. I got the pictures below online so you can see what I’m talking about.

What I was obsessed about were the light sconces. They were just a light bulb with a little curtain covering it in the shape of a circle. Genius…and cheap!

With regards to the ceiling, Do I really need to explain why this makes a fabulous one?

The Giger-Bar which, today, exists in the Swiss city of Chur, was originally planned for New York City. When it became apparent that the budget for the bar envisioned for New York was not going to be enough to allow for the design and construction of the elements which had been planned for it, Giger decided it would be wiser to wait until it could be financed properly.

Fortunately, Thomas Domenig came into Giger’s life at about the same time. In his youth, Giger had attended high-school with his wife. Domenig is the number-one architect of Chur. He built about a third of the city. There were plans for a café in his Kalchbuhl-Center, which was already under construction, and Giger had, evidently, shown up at just the right moment. He was able to convince Domenig to change his plans and back the idea of a bar.

The furniture program for the Giger-Bar was significantly expanded by the new designs for a chair, a glass topped table and the bar itself. The establishment’s door is that of Giger’s armoire design, enlarged by one third. The oval mirrors, the wall lamps and the special coat racks were also designed by Giger and carried out with the aid of Giger’s most important team of technical experts, de Fries, Schedler, Ammann, Vaterlaus, Gruber and Brigitte von Kanel.

Construction took, approximately, two years. The bar’s official opening was on February 8, 1992, three days after Giger’s birthday.

It is Giger’s hope that, one day, a Giger-Bar can still be realized in New York City, his favorite amongst all the cities of the world.
