Super Vegetable No. 1: Broccoli – “Italian Wild Cabbage”
Originally from Italy, broccoli is a member of the cabbage family, and can be bought fresh or frozen. The head of broccoli is made up of small individual sprouts.
Why it’s healthy: This vegetable is a rich source of three powerful antioxidants – vitamin A, vitamin C and the mineral selenium. Selenium helps prevent oesophagus and stomach cancer. Vitamin A prevents lung and bladder cancer and vitamin C builds up resistance to cataracts (opacity in the lens of the eye).
Winter Vegetable Crostata with Goat Cheese and Thyme

I’m making lemonade out of lemons here by continuing to celebrate winter’s bounty – yams and winter squash and beets and Jerusalem artichokes and onions, sprinkled with thyme, green onions, and goat cheese, and all baked into a buttery crust. Maybe I’m not ready to say goodbye to winter after all. (OK, that was a lie, I’m totally ready.)

Australian Fruit and Vegetable Season List
It is important to know what is in season when heading to the fruit and grocers. Knowing what is going to be best eaten in Winter and Spring makes a huge impact on the environment – it can lead to eating more locally grown produce than relying on off season fruit and vegetables being trucked and flown to your area. Here is our Fruit and Vegetable Seasonal List for Australians. Keep it bookmarked and check back when you hit the shops!
