Poll Offers Rep. Weiner Some Encouraging News

A fresh poll offered encouraging news to Rep. Anthony Weiner, as he tries to fend off calls for his resignation over a scandal involving sexually charged messages he sent to women online.

The Marist-NY1 poll released late Thursday of registered voters in Mr. Weiner’s New York City district found that 56% of those polled don’t think he should resign, while 33% do.

That’s a boost from a survey conducted just a few days earlier by the same pollsters of voters citywide which found 51% of voters didn’t think he should resign. The poll came on a day when Mr. Weiner again said he had no intention of leaving office.

The new poll, which has a 4.5 to 5 percentage point margin of error, was conducted Wednesday, amid two significant developments in the controversy. First, reports surfaced that Mr. Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, is pregnant with the couple’s first child. And a photo began circulating online, apparently of Mr. Weiner’s genitalia.
